Wind Caves Logan Canyon

The Wind Caves is a popular hiking trail located in Logan Canyon in northern Utah. These caves are natural rock formations that have been eroded over time to create hollowed-out areas in the rock on top of the cliff. It is definitely not an easy hike, but the caves are cool to explore and the views are amazing!

Parking for the Wind Caves

Parking for the Wind Caves in Logan Canyon is right off the side of Highway 89 on the north side of the road. There is paved parking at the trailhead, but if that is full, there is a dirt parking area to the west. There are trails from both parking areas the converge onto the trail up to the caves.

Hiking to the Wind Caves

The hike to the Wind Caves is 4.0 miles long round-trip with 1095 ft of elevation gain. This is a steep trail, but there were lots of families with younger kids on the trail. We attempted the trail in the afternoon the first time, but it was too hot and there wasn’t very much shade, so we had to turn around before even going a mile. The second time we attempted it, we did it earlier in the day and it was much better as there is intermittent shade in the morning.

Hike Wind Caves

There are beautiful views for the whole hike and soon you don’t hear the sound of the road and you can just enjoy being in nature. There were a few points where we weren’t sure which way to go, but either choice is fine and will get you to the top. It is best to have a map with you. If you are using an app, make sure to have the map ready before heading into the canyon as there is no cell reception.

There are two small caves…more like alcoves…partway up the mountain. These are not the actual Wind Caves. Keep going!

Wind Cave Hike

We saw these caves from down the trail and got excited that we were almost to the top of the hike. Unfortunately it was not the Wind Caves. But the kids enjoyed exploring them anyway. These little caves are not deep at all, but the kids enjoyed climbing up to them to look inside.

Wind Caves Hike

The Wind Caves Logan Canyon

The Wind Caves are amazing! The trail takes you on top of the caves first. Then you can go across a narrow archway or go around the backside of the cliff and the climb down into the caves. The floor is slick rock and slanted toward the ledge and it has loose dirt on it, so be very cautious as it is easy to slip.

There are two “rooms” in the cave. The Wind Caves provide some nice shade while you catch your breath and enjoy the beautiful view. There is an alcove around the bottom left side of the caves. It is slick rock and has lose dirt on it, so be cautious as there is a long drop over the edge.

What to Pack

The Wind Caves Trail is exposed a lot of the time, so make sure to pack a hat, sunscreen, snacks and lots of water. We saw people heading up when we were heading down with no water we were very surprised because we drank almost all of our water. Make sure to wear sturdy shoes as the trail is uneven and it is slippery in some places, especially in the caves themselves.

Are the Wind Caves Worth Visiting?

Absolutely! The views the whole way are spectacular and the caves are fun to explore. The trail is on the longer side of what we normally to do, but it was definitely worth it!
