Window Arch City of Rocks

Window Arch is a fun place to explore in City of Rocks National Reserve. It is one of the most visited features at City of Rocks for a good reason. This is a natural arch that is not too far from the parking lot. It is the perfect place to climb around and explore or practice your arch photography. The trail is perfect for families as it is short and has lots of rocks to climb on, however the trail is not wheel friendly.

The City of Rocks, located in southern Idaho, has over 600 climbing routes for both traditional and sport climbers. Whether you’re a beginner looking to try your hand at rock climbing or an experienced climber seeking a new challenge, City of Rocks offers a variety of options. The granite rockface has excellent grip and solid holds, allowing climbers to feel confident and secure on the wall. The routes range from easy slab climbs to challenging crack systems and technical face climbs.

Getting There

Window Arch is just north of campsite 37 off of Birch Creek Road. There is no cell phone service in the area, so make sure to have your map ready before you go.

City of Rocks is run by the National Park Service. There was no entry fee when we went, but the latest information can be found here.

Parking for Window Arch City of Rocks

The parking lot for Window Arch is just off of Birch Creek Road. It is a dirt parking lot that also serves as the parking lot for a few campsites.

Window Arch is the perfect place to stop for a short walk to a natural arch surrounded with lots of rocks to climb on. The arch is about 300 feet from the parking lot. Window Arch is small and lumpy, but it is cool to explore and the surrounding landscapes are stunning. The parking lot and trail go right past 2 campsites so be prepared to be watched as you go by. This is a great place to teach kids about erosion and how different rock formations are formed.

What to Pack

This is a short walk from the car, but it is exposed the whole way. Make sure to bring hats and sunscreen. There are no amenities in City of Rocks, so make sure to bring water and food for the duration of your adventure. The path is uneven and it is a good idea to wear shoes with good grip so you can climb on the rocks.

Is it Worth Visiting Window Arch City of Rocks?

If you are already planning on going to City of Rocks, definitely make this one of your stops! Window Arch is not worth driving out just to see on its own.
