Top 11 Things to Do on the Westman Islands, Iceland

The Westman Islands, also known as Vestmannaeyjar, are a stunning archipelago of the coast of Iceland. These islands are characterized by dramatic cliffs, volcanoes, and black-sand beaches. It is also home to large colonies of puffins and whales.

Visiting the Westman Islands was one of the highlights of our family’s trip to Iceland, along with chasing Iceland’s waterfalls. You do not want to miss this hidden gem!

We have all the information you need about things to do for a Westman Islands day trip in the summer…although we recommend taking two days to explore the island as it is tough to squeeze it all into one day.

Westman Islands

The Westman Islands are an archipelago, or group of islands, off the southwest coast of Iceland. It is made of 18 islands formed by volcanic eruptions 10,000 years ago.

The largest island is named Heimaey. It is the only inhabited island in the Westman Islands and has about 4,400 residents. Six other islands have hunting cabins on them but they are not continuously lived in.

How to Get to the Westman Islands

Getting to the Westman Islands by ferry is relatively fast and easy with regular ferry services departing from the mainland and Haimaey.

Cost of Visiting Westman Islands

The cost of visiting the Westman Islands varies depending on what kind of activities you choose to do.

You can pay for the ferry to get there and then explore the island on your own with no additional costs.

You can also choose to do Puffin Viewing Tours, visit the aquarium, or visit the museums, all of which add up.

Do You Need a Car on the Westman Islands?

Do you need a car on the Westman Islands? No. The island is 3.8 miles (6.1 km) from one end to the other, so you could walk it all in one day.

When our family went, we chose to take our rental car on the ferry with us so that we could save our energy for hiking and cut down on the whining. Parking was easy and it was worth paying to take our car with us.

1. Puffin Viewing

The Westman Islands are home to an incredible array of birdlife. Puffins make their nests on the islands during the summer months, providing a fantastic opportunity for birdwatching and photography.

You can see puffins nesting around the island in many different areas such as Puffin Lookout or Kervíkurfjall. Puffin viewing is best in the morning or evening when they aren’t out looking for food.

2. Hike Eldfell Volcano

Hike up Eldfell, the volcano that erupted in 1973 and devastated Haimaey. Many different trails take you through the volcanic landscape, so you can create your own adventure.

All of the trails offer breathtaking panoramic views of the island from the summit. It’s a moderately challenging hike but well worth the effort for the stunning views.

3. Sprangan

One of the most unique things to do while visiting the Westman Islands is to try the traditional sport of Sprangan.

Spangan, or Spranga, originated with islanders swinging from ropes to gather puffin eggs to eat. Today it is a sport that involves acrobatics while swinging on the rope.

Our attempt at Sprangan was more about holding onto the rope for dear life and less about acrobatics.

4. Sea Life Trust Beluga Whale Sanctuary

Visit the world’s first Beluga Whale Sanctuary as part of your Westman Islands Day Trip. The sanctuary is located in the bay and there is an outdoor pen for the beluga whales to swim in.

The Sea Life Trust Beluga Whale Sanctuary (also known as Sæheimar Aquarium) is a fun stop for the whole family and you will get to see puffins and beluga whales up close. Visit their website for more information.

5. Hike Heimaklettur

Heimaklettur is the large cliff you see when you first come into the harbor in Heimaey. Heimaklettur is a challenging and beautiful hike full of ladders, wildlife, exquisite views, and historical artifacts.

This hike is difficult and not for anyone afraid of heights, but the views make it all worth it. You can look out across the whole island of Heimaey (on a clear day) from the top of this sea cliff.

6. Eldheimar Museum

Visit the Eldheimar Museum, which provides a fascinating insight into the volcanic eruption that occurred in 1973. You can take a guided tour to learn about the eruption’s impact on the island and the recovery efforts since then.

7. Elephant Rock

Add this natural rock formation to your list of things to see while exploring the Westman Islands. Elephant Rock’s unique shape and beauty have made it a popular spot to stop and take a photo or two.

The kids couldn’t really see the elephant shape in the rock, but it must have been the angle we were looking at it.

8. Sagnheimar Folk Museum

Immerse yourself in the history and culture of the Westman Islands at the Sagnheimar Folk Museum.

The museum shows the islanders’ way of life, their connection to the sea, and the impact of volcanic eruptions on the community. Interactive exhibits and artifacts provide a glimpse into the islands’ heritage.

9. Golf at Golfklúbbur Vestmannaeyja

Golfklúbbur Vestmannaeyja is rated as one of the top 200 golf courses in Europe by Golf Daily. This golf course is located in the crater of an old volcano and is right on the ocean.

The golf is challenging with the ever-changing wind, but the backdrop of dramatic cliffs and crashing waves makes it unforgettable.

You can also try the unique experience of Midnight Golf in the summer when the sun does not set.

10. Attend a festival

The Westman Islands host an annual music festival called “Þjóðhátíð” during the first weekend of August. This celebration attracts thousands of visitors who come to enjoy live music, Icelandic traditions, and a lively atmosphere.

11. Explore the town of Vestmannaeyjabær

Vestmannaeyjabær is a cute small town on the island of Heimaey. There are many shops to explore and it is nice to just walk around and take in the buildings and natural scenery. Visiting the parks and the Aerslabelgir (Bounce Pillows) is a must for kids and the kids-at-heart.

What to Pack

The weather on the Westman Islands can be extreme and will change quickly. Make sure to take layers of clothing so you will be prepared for any weather that arises. Make sure to wear sturdy shoes, especially if you plan on exploring any of the hikes or nature trails.

Absolutely! The Westman Islands offer an amazing experience. With stunning landscapes, diverse wildlife, rich history, and outdoor activities, the islands are a hidden gem!
