First Dam – Logan Utah

First Dam sits at the mouth of Logan Canyon in northern Utah. This dam started out as a way for the settlers to have water for their crops and has turned into a beautiful recreation spot. It is also the location for the popular local activity called the Polar Plunge. First Dam is easy to get to, making it a popular spot that can get crowded. Canyon Entrance Park is located along the banks of the Logan River at First Dam and adds to the available activities to do in the area.

Logan Canyon, Utah

Logan Canyon is a picturesque canyon in northern Utah located between Logan and Garden City. It is a long canyon with stunning views, tall trees, towering cliffs, the beautiful Logan River, and natural caves. Farther up the canyon is cooler in the summer, but if you want to cool down in the summer, the water at First Dam is nice and cold.

Paddleboarding and Kayaking

First Dam is the perfect place to paddle around and enjoy the water. The water is cold, but that is perfect for a hot summer day. When we visited, there was a group of Utah State University students trying to break the record for the number of people on one paddle board. It was pretty funny to watch.

Bridge Jumping/ Polar Plunge

On the east side of Canyon Entrance Park is a bridge over the Logan River. On the west side of the bridge it deep enough to jump off. This is a fun activity to cool down in the summer. Those brave (or crazy) enough to do it in the winter call it the Polar Plunge, and it is a popular activity for the students at near-by Utah State University.

First Dam is the perfect place to cool down in the summer. The brisk water from the Logan River enters on the east side. The water is chilly and the kids didn’t last long in the water, but they enjoyed it.

Check out the Dam

There is a path that runs along the side of Canyon Road that goes down to the actual dam. You can’t go out on the dam, but it kind of fun to see the water spilling over the edge.
